Corrupted

Twisted by the very fuel that saved humanity, these monsters consume all life.

In the grim history of Sera, the term 'Corrupted' describes living beings mutated beyond recognition by exposure to raw Imulsion or the Lambent Plague. While often distinguished from the genetically adapted Locust Horde, these entities share a terrifying origin in the toxic fuel that powers civilization. They are not merely infected; their biology is rewritten into crystalline, aggressive forms driven by a hive-like hunger for more energy and life.

Lore & Background

Unlike the Locust, who retained some tactical intelligence, the Corrupted were driven purely by instinctual consumption. They sought out Imulsion sources to accelerate their own growth and spread, eventually turning on their creators in the Hollows. This internal conflict nearly destroyed the Locust before COG forces could intervene. The final confrontation saw humanity sacrifice much of its surface world to contain the plague, leaving behind a scarred landscape where these twisted forms once roamed freely.

In Their Own Story

The bunker door hissed open, revealing a corridor slick with green sludge. Marcus froze as he recognized the uniform on the figure ahead—it was Sergeant Baird, or at least what remained of him. The man's skin had calcified into translucent shards that chimed softly in the silence. His eyes were gone, replaced by pulsing amber light. He raised a crystalline arm, not to strike, but to beckon toward the glowing fissure behind him. There was no pain in his posture, only a hollow hunger for the fuel burning within the walls.

Reader's Guide

The science of Imulsion corruption remains one of Sera's darkest mysteries. It is believed that the substance interacts with DNA on a molecular level, replacing cellular structures with energy-conductive crystals. This process accelerates exponentially near high concentrations, turning victims into vectors for further infection. Metaphysically, the Corrupted represent the cost of unchecked industrialization. The Locust sought to control the fuel, but the fuel controlled them in return. This suggests a parasitic relationship where Imulsion is not merely energy, but a sentient force seeking propagation through biological hosts. Historical records from the COG indicate that containment protocols were established after the Locust War. Quarantine zones marked on maps still warn of residual radiation capable of triggering re-emergence. Understanding this corruption was key to defeating the Swarm Queen and sealing the Hollows.
