Reaver
A living siege engine forged from Imulsion and terror.
The Reaver is not a manufactured tool, but a biological horror evolved from the depths of Sera's Hollows. Standing as one of the most formidable creatures within the Locust Horde, this massive beast serves as a living siege engine capable of dismantling human fortifications with its bare claws. While often categorized alongside heavy weaponry due to its destructive output, it is fundamentally a mutated organism powered by Imulsion radiation.

- Gears of War 2
Lore & Background
First appearing during the Locust War, Reavers became symbols of the Horde's unstoppable might. Their presence signaled a major offensive, often leading entire squadrons into retreat before they even engaged. Even after the fall of the Locust leadership, remnants of these beasts surfaced within the Swarm faction, proving that the genetic legacy of Imulsion mutation persisted long after the war ended. Note that the Swarmak, a different creature, first appears in Gears of War 4.
In Their Own Story
The ground shook first, a rhythmic tremor that rattled teeth and knocked dust from the ceiling. Sergeant Cole signaled silence as the concrete wall ahead buckled inward. Through the debris emerged a silhouette far larger than any man, its carapace gleaming in the dim light of burning wreckage. The Reaver roared, a sound like tearing metal, and raised a claw the size of a shield. There was no time for orders, only the instinct to survive.
Reader's Guide
The Reaver operates as a living siege engine within the Locust ranks, utilizing its massive claws to dismantle fortifications and crush infantry alike. Its carapace is thick enough to withstand standard rifle fire, forcing COG soldiers to rely on heavy ordnance or explosives to penetrate its hide. These beasts do not wield tools; their biology is the weapon, evolved through deep exposure to Imulsion radiation within the Hollows. Commanders of the Horde deploy Reavers as shock troops during surface assaults, using them to break defensive lines and instill terror among human forces. In later conflicts, Swarm variants retained this brute strength while adapting to new environments. Survivors learn quickly that engaging a Reaver at close range is suicidal; distance and heavy firepower are the only viable tactics against such overwhelming biological power. Their roar signals imminent destruction, often shaking the ground beneath infantry feet. COG doctrine dictates immediate suppression or retreat when one is spotted. Heavy weapons teams prioritize these targets to prevent them from overrunning positions with their sheer physical might. Understanding this threat is vital for any soldier facing the depths of the Locust war machine.
