Fenris

The Goddess of Shadows who turns friends against each other in a battle of trust and betrayal.

Fenris is a central antagonist in Fire Emblem Shadows, a 2025 social deduction strategy game developed by Intelligent Systems for Android and iOS. She is the Goddess of Shadows who attacks the Kingdom of Ast, forcing Prince Kurt to flee her home country. Unlike traditional tactical role-playing games in the series, this title features real-time multiplayer battles where one player secretly serves Fenris to sabotage allies. The narrative splits into light and dark halves, detailing the goddess's servants like Hati and Skoll as they hunt down heroes across two parallel storylines.

Lore & Background

In the world of Fire Emblem Shadows, Fenris leads an army that invades the Kingdom of Ast, causing Prince Kurt to flee with her retainers. Her servants include the siblings Hati and Skoll, who pursue Kurt and eventually recruit Joachim, a boy carrying Fenris's blood. The dark half of the story reveals context for Fenris's actions, showing her forces engaging in combat against the servants of the Light Goddess Naga. A key turning point occurs when Skoll appears to kill Kurt after she refuses a dark pact; however, this is revealed to be part of a deception orchestrated by the traitor Gotthold, who broke his pact with Fenris to save Kurt before perishing as punishment.

In Their Own Story

The light story begins with Kurt fleeing Ast after Fenris's servants invade. She seeks safety in Holtz with her fiancee Rose but is hunted by Hati and Skoll. After Skoll seemingly kills her following a refusal of a dark pact, Kurt realizes the group has an internal traitor feeding information to Fenris. Retainer Gotthold admits his betrayal, revealing he made a pact to save Kurt's life after the attack was not a dream. Defying orders to kill Kurt, Gotthold retains his free will but dies as punishment. Meanwhile, in the shadow story, servants of Naga named Sai and Shea find an amnesiac woman named Lyn, believing she was summoned to fight Fenris. They encounter Hati and Skoll, who have recruited another amnesiac named Dimitri, leading to a confrontation where Dimitri fights Lyn.

Reader's Guide

Fire Emblem Shadows features real-time strategy gameplay with social deduction elements where three players work together against enemies, but one secretly serves Fenris. This traitor can attack allies during automatic combat. The game is split into two rounds: the first allows players to demonstrate their loyalty without risk of loss, followed by a vote to identify the Fenris-aligned player. If the light side guesses correctly, they receive additional revivals. Once revealed, the traitor transforms into an animalistic version based on a body trait and must be fought in the second round to win. Players can adjust skills and weapons outside combat but only control magic and healing during battle. Microtransactions allow players to unlock characters like Lyn until October 28 or purchase stronger gear that can overwhelm opponents regardless of social deduction success.
